Do you ever feel like there is a huge disconnect between what you see in the mirror and what you see on photos?

I used to be suuuuper into magazines, these days I actively avoid walking past past magazine racks in supermarkets because it just makes my blood boil that all those body-shaming/life-shaming/diet-pill-touting tabloids STILL attract enough readers to warrant pumping out more of their toxic sludge. But clearly, body-shaming celebrities SELLS. Why do you think that is? Does reading about how a celebrity gained weight or "ruined" their face with fillers simply make us feel better about our own appearance? Is that all there is to it? ⠀

There’s never been a better time to be in the skin care business: Elaborate, multi-step routines have become a status symbol, millions of people watch actresses, CEOs and flight attendants explain their products of choice in detail, plus you even get to tap into #feminism and promote self-care, confidence, self-love!⠀

I used to be super into skin care in my early to mid twenties and would spend hours researching ingredients, products and brands - to make my skin look better now, and because I wanted to do my my future self the best possibe chance at life by presenting her with an as-youthful-as-possible dermis. Also, because having a well-thought-out skin care routine just seemed like a cool-girlboss-who's-got-her-life-together thing to have. ⠀

But let’s not kid ourselves and pretend that our current collective mega interest in skin care is driven by anything other than our (societally induced) craving to fixate on our looks and self-soothe our insecurities. Yes, face masks can be relaxing, but if you are making yourself stick to your 6-step routine even when you’re exhausted and would much rather be doing something else, how much “self-care” is really happening in that moment? ⠀
